Free Guy | Not A Movie Review by Movie Insert | Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer | MOVIE INSERT

It’s so great going into a movie, jiski koi bhi promotions have not reached me. All you know that its an RPG genre, Ryan Reynolds and that'senough to generate major interest. Hey y'all my name is Sucharita, this is Film Companion, you're watching Not A Movie Review and right now I am notgoing to be reviewing Free Guy. I feel like I’ve gotten to see some really fungenre movie recently, well fun, I don't know. Kuruthi was home invasion, Chehre wasescape room, Bhoot Police was horror-comedy, and now with Free Guy we’re in the newest territory. RPG science-fiction, and it is easily the most exciting of the lot, not just genre wise, but also as a movie, because its made with big Hollywood money, big budgets, the whole thing. Guy is an NPC in a video game, yaane non-playable character. Jaise Need For Speed mein thecop whose chasing you, but one you cannot really interact with, outside of his assigned role of chasing you. So Guy is a blue-shirt khaki pant wearing bank teller, who has the same coffee each morning, walks the same route at to and from work, yaani NPC mein bhi sabse boring kaam hai uska, par sabse khush hain, in this Truman Show life, so that people watching and interacting with him, canfeel better about their own mundane achievements artificially enhanced by way of flashinglights and targets in game play. Until this Truman Show turns into Westworld and the characters created purely for servility and perverse paying customer pleasure, rise above their own code, change the rules. Michela Crichton did it in Westworld, but he also did it in Jurassic Park, its the same thing, that the monsteryou created has risen up against you, how do you keep it contained withinthe world they’re supposed to inhabit? Role Playing Game yaane RPG is even morespecific, kyunki the characters with the conflict are mirrored in reality, one’s actions are directly responsible for their fictional counterpart, and once you start thinking aboutit's complexities its fascinating. Director Shawn Levy takes this genreand adds Ryan Reynolds to it. So now we’re watching Ready Player One,but with Deadpool, the tone of the film automatically presents itself. It's self-aware, Easter-egg and homagefilm, filled meta comedy, built around a gorgeousand highly funny man. One is tempted to fault RyanReynolds a bit for playing the same kind of characters over and over again, and I'm not just talking about inmovies, but like chat shows, red carpet events, social media, ads, its all very familiar now. But then youre like, toh? Are you notentertained? Is it boring? No, its all very why-fix-something-that-aint-broken? And frankly Free Guy is not attemptingto be more than what it is, despite having a slightly preachy greedis the undoing of man undercurrent. Taiak Waititi is Antwan, he isthe insatiably greedy owner of the game, he is short sighted, drunk on power. Again, as with anything Taika Waitititouches,

The tone just presents itself, and kyunki who khud hi itna behtareenwriter, director, actor, sab kuch hai, all in one, ek bhi note galatpadd hi nahi sakta. It is a delight to watch everyone hold theirown in a big ensemble movie like this. There’s Stranger Things alum Joe Keery, the multi-faceted Utkarsh Ambudkar, award winning actor Jodie Comer, they're all supplemented by excellentwriting by Matt Lieberman and Zack Penn. Free Guy is refreshing, because of theSin City like world building. Each character has enoughtraits to make them a type, but not enough for them to be truly unique, which is a larger commentaryon our every day routine lives, bhed chaal, rat race, all of that. There’s also some questions onour society’s inbuilt class divide and what the powerful would do, if theyhave no one left to oppress/ torment? The movie also feels relevant, because of allthe game play YouTube/ Twitch streaming, very accurate portrayal of howthe internet actually works, IRL, you know as opposed to,“aur phir yeh clip viral ho gayi, internet par". The movie does go on a bit about the virtues ofkindness and being good people on the internet, which is little bit, kind of on the nose, but, I didn’t mind it, because its not like that’s all the writing was about, what it was mostly about, was making sure you're having asgood a time as Ryan Reynolds clearly is. Surprise Avengers and Star Wars references,a very sweet Alex Trebec appearance, there’s also a Channing Tatum cameo and its just as stupid and funas you’d expect it to be, think Seth Rogen’s ThisIs The End, but not PG 13. And a hilarious character named Dude, who looks like a swole guy, but isn’t programmed enough tohave fully formed sentences yet, and its all just filled in enough tobe continuously fun and funny and yet it doesn’t feel too stuffed at all. Free Guy is releasing in Indiantheatres this week, as always, jaaoge toh please be careful andmindful of everyone around you. So, on a scale of 1 to 10 FreeGuy is 1111, what is this?
